What is mobilisation and manipulation?
br>
Mobilisation refers to gentle oscillatory movement in a specific way to enhance increased joint mobility and range of movement. Often when a particular area is stiff and lacking in range, for example the lower back vertebrae or an ankle or knee joint after injury or surgery, mobilisation is a great technique to help restore function. The consequences of having a joint that doesn't move optimally, can result in other areas compensating or muscle adaptation or shortening.

Manipulation is a more vigorous form of mobilisation, often known in other therapies as a realignment. In physiotherapy it is usually a grade V mobilisation. There can often be clicking or popping associated with this type of technique, which may seem alarming, but when carried out by a professional, this is very safe.

We have included this section as one of our services as it is not well known that physiotherapists use these techniques, and often people associate this type of technique with Osteopathy or Chiropractic. Our belief is that Physiotherapy can address these issues and with a more holistic approach. For example it may be necessary to warm soft tissues up properly first with massage before carrying out a manipulation.
